April 16th School resumed after the Easter Holidays with a satisfactory attendance.
April 18th A report by H.M. Inspector on this School is as follows.
“The two lower Infant Classes make fairly good progress. The senior class, which is more immediately under the charge of the Infant Mistress, has been taught with much success: reading is creditably fluent, writing is neat, and arithmetic is accurate and covers a wide range of operation. A perusal of the Admission Register showed that the age of pupils entering School for the first time is still in many cases too high. In the lower class of the Junior Division, there is much promise of good work, and already reading is quite fluent, writing is neat, and many of the class can do simple sums in Arithmetic with creditable accuracy. The upper class is taught with great skill and with marked success in such subjects as recitation and geography.
Uniformity cannot be expected for some time in arithmetic and composition, subjects which demand a long training.
The tests applied to the Senior Division Class gave results which must be considered very satisfactory in the circumstances of the school.
Records of temperature have been kept in all class – rooms throughout the winter and spring. Taking Miss Dunne’s room as representing the others, it may be noted that the temperature at 10 a.m. from 4th March to 3rd April only reached fifty degrees four times, and that on Febr. 5th the temperature was only thirty-four degrees” (Signed I.
