H.M. Inspector’s Report on Maddiston Public School.

                                                                                                            Session 1934-1935.

“ The Infant Department is under control of a teacher who combines efficiency with an enthusiasm for the methods she has adopted. Instruction in reading is bases mainly on the phonic system but the faults that are so often associated with this system are avoided, and a satisfactory measure of success is attending the endeavour to cultivate fluent speech and articulate enunciation. Finger-pointing should be discouraged as early as possible. A graduated course of concrete work in counting is in operation for the younger sections; at the higher stages, the pupils have made convincing progress in the mastery of addition and subtraction, in writing and in handwork.

Inspection of the Junior Division left a general impression of consistent and solid attainment in most branches of the curriculum. While addition and penmanship seem to be capable of improvement, reading and spelling reach a good average standard throughout, and class I(b) deserve credit for their ready and well-informed answering in history and geography. In the comprehensively taught senior division the slower pupils receive the attention to which they are entitled, Class II is the weakest and needs the special effort its present teacher is bringing to bear on it.

Written exercises in all four classes have been regularly set and carefully supervised, but, for the less able groups, some simplification or variation of the exercises in English Composition is recommended. The children speak well when reciting verse and have acquired a sound knowledge of the prescribed portions of history and geography.

The headmaster displays zeal and energy in controlling and testing the work of the classes.”
