21.3.49                        H.M.Inspectors Report on Maddiston School–Session 1948 - 1949

                                                                                    General

School                          “Although there is no staffroom other than the headmasters room,

Examined                     the premises are generally satisfactory. Some of the classrooms

6.1.48                          are in need of redecoration. The lavatories are old, but they are reasonably satisfactory and well kept. . New washhand basins were installed in the cloakrooms in 1947. Individual tables and chairs have been obtained for the beginners’ classroom this summer: it is hoped that in the near future it may be found possible to equip the other infant rooms similarly. In some of the primary classrooms individual pupils were occupying seats of quite unsuitable dimensions, further, many of the seats sloped excessively and were in need of immediate repair. A former cookery room in the basement has been used for the service of school meals, it is dark and not well ventilated, and the Authority intend to erect a dining room on an adjacent site.

Until recently the roll has been fairly constant: averaging about three hundred and forty at the beginning of each school year. Last session, however, there was an increase, and the appointment of an additional teacher has brought the staff to ten, in addition to the headmaster. At the beginning of this session there were three hundred and sixty eight pupils on the roll; if, as seems possible, this number increases further, serious difficulties of accommodation will arise. Attendance has been only fairly satisfactory in recent sessions; this session up to the date of inspection has it has been good.

The organisation of a school this size presents considerable difficulties, which have not in the past been overcome The system of classification and promotion within the school has not always been sound, and a retardation exists at practically all stages. It is very important that steps should be taken to avoid the continuance of this weakness, in particular careful consideration must be given to the promotion of the present class infants IIb. In a school where ten classes are organised in seven stages, normal age promotion from class to class will only be achieved if group methods of instruction are applied throughout  both infant and primary divisions.

The Infant Mistress appointed in 1947, has tackled the organisation of her department with enthusiasm, and has given the benefits of her wider experience to her three assistants. Throughout the division the desirability of teaching the children in groups in accordance with their ability is recognised in reading and to a limited extent in counting. The pupils of class Ib had made a promising beginning, and those in IIa answered very well under oral examination; in classes Ia and IIb, however, many of the pupils still required a good deal of oral practice in the immediate recognition of words and phrases, in the use of phonics, and in the elementary facts of addition and subtraction. Particularly in class Ia, a faster rate of progress should not be incompatible with a thorough  grounding in these basic subjects. In class IIa written work was creditably neat and tidy, and in the other classes it was reasonably satisfactory. The effectiveness of the teaching of oral composition in class IIa deserves special mention. It was very pleasing to note the attention paid at all stages to the less formal aspects of education, most of the work in art, music, physical education, and handwork, was very satisfactory. And the quality of the recitation in class IIb, the singing in class IIa, and of the handwork of both these classes, calls for a special word of praise.

In the primary divisions, classes 1, 2b and 2a were all in the hands of probationers in their first year of teaching. These teachers showed keenness and ability and were making commendable use of group methods of instruction. In the basic subjects most of the pupils were making satisfactory progress and had reached a fair standard of proficiency. More work should, however, be attempted in written composition. In history and geography there was a tendency to ----------- the subject matter in too much detail. Recreational subjects were fairly well taught, though more enterprise might have been shown in the teaching of art.

Classes 3, 4 and 5 were in the hands of experienced teachers. Class 4 was reasonably uniform in achievement, but in the other two classes the range of ability and achievement was very wide; variation of the method and content of the instruction and rate of progress is desirable within each class. English work was generally satisfactory, class 4, in particular, being alert, interested, and well informed. In class 5 questions on geography and on matters of topical interest evoked a disappointingly meagre response: recitation of verse, on the other hand, was very good. In Arithmetic the oral answering of class 3 was poor and there was a pronounced tendency to count by units; written work too, showed the need for more revision. In class 4 the standard reached in arithmetic was better and in class 5 it was, on the whole, good. The influence of examinations has led in the past to some neglect of music, art, and physical education

Now that a new type of promotion examination is to be adopted, it is hoped that these subjects will be further developed. In art a greater variety of media and more attention to colour and imaginative work are desirable.
